Once named Africa’s richest woman, Isabel dos Santos, the daughter of Angola’s former president Jose Eduardo dos Santos, has had her assets seized after years of accusations of embezzlement and money laundering, Portugal’s Lusa news agency reported earlier this week. Angola’s Supreme Court has ordered the “preventive” seizure of dos Santos’s assets worth around $1 billion, Catarina Demony reports for Reuters.
In a court document dated Dec. 19, Angolan authorities claimed to have evidence of criminal behavior and ordered seizures of dos Santos’ assets from “all banking institutions.” Interpol issued a red notice on behalf of Angolan authorities for dos Santos last month asking global law enforcement authorities to find and provisionally arrest dos Santos “pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.”
