The Memphis Police Department announced on Saturday that it is deactivating its specialized SCORPION unit. SCORPION officers were involved in the death of Tyre Nichols in early January, Joe Hernandez reports for NPR. Other officers in the unit “unreservedly agree with this next step,” a statement from the department said.

“While the heinous actions of a few cast a cloud of dishonor on the title SCORPION… it is imperative that we, the Memphis Police Department, take proactive steps in the healing process for all impacted,” the statement continued. SCORPION stands for Street Crimes Operations to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods.
