Ohio Governor Signs Massive Criminal Justice Reform Bill Into Law
The bill, SB288, was designed to make it easier for Ohioans to adjust to life after their release and give state officials more latitude to release inmates early, along with substantial updates to criminal code and procedure.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a massive criminal justice reform bill into law on Tuesday, Jeremy Pelzer reports for Cleveland.com. The bill, SB288, was designed to make it easier for Ohioans to adjust to life after their release and give state officials more latitude to release inmates early, along with substantial updates to criminal code and procedure. A significant part of the bill also expands when people can seek to have their criminal records sealed or expunged.
The bill will, after a push from domestic violence advocates, create a new offense for the crime of “strangulation,” require that warrants for more than 30 high-level crimes to be entered into national databases within 48 hours and classify test strips for substances like the opioid fentanyl as “drug paraphernalia.”
